Jesus admonishes the laborers who protested after receiving the same pay as the ones who were hired at the end of the day. As He often did, Jesus used dramatic parables to teach how radically different God's ways are above our ways; there's no injustice here, it was the legal agreement. At its core, envy is evil because it is covetousness; "Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's goods".
It's not about clock hours in the heat. Each of us has a finite time to labor, and labor hard we must, whether for a few years or a lifetime. All the holy saints before us will rejoice that we'll receive the same payment as they do; so rejoice also for those who come after us.
