BLESSED MIGUEL AGUSTIN PRO, SATURDAY OF THE THIRTY-THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, NOVEMBER 23, 2024

Gospel

Lk 20:27-40

Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus, saying,“Teacher, Moses wrote for us, If someone’s brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman but died childless. Then the second and the third married her, and likewise all the seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been married to her.” Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called  ‘Lord’the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” Some of the scribes said in reply,“Teacher, you have answered well.” And they no longer dared to ask him anything.

REFLECTION

And they no longer dared to ask him anything.

We sing, “Alleluia, Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death, and brought life to light through the Gospel.” In this battle between good and evil, lukewarmness is not an option.

No matter if in the Garden of Eden, Jesus’ time, in the 1920’s, or 2024, the inhabitants of the world will gloat over you and be glad that harm has come your way.

Padre Miguel Pro was a Jesuit, schooled in Europe. Returning to Mexico in 1927, he fought the order of President Calles of “no public worship”. He ministered in disguise, moving from one place to another, and established “ Communion Stations” all over Mexico City.

He was framed, accused, sentenced and executed all in one day of a bombing. Right before the firing squad, Padre Pro with outstretched arms in the form of the cross, yelled out “Viva Cristo Rey”. So many Mexican citizens with photos of the actual firing squad death of Padre Pro swarmed the streets and the funeral entourage yelling, “Viva Cristo Rey”.

Fast forward to 2024, two young men yelled out “ Jesus is King” and they were told that they were in the wrong rally and taunted to go to the smaller rally down the street. Amidst jeers and cheers by the crowd, these young men were escorted out by security.

Take away—“And they no longer dared to ask him anything”. Never ever mock, make fun of our God. Instead, lead all to God through love, example, prayer and lived lives.

One day we hopefully will hear God say. “Come up here” and up we will go in a cloud.

“If I meet any long-faced saints in Heaven I will cheer them up with a Mexican hat dance!” (Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro)
