FEAST OF SAINT ANDREW, SATURDAY OF THE THIRTY-FOURTH, OR LAST , WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, NOVEMBER 30, 2024

Gospel

Mt 4:18-22

As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them,“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”At once they left their nets and followed him. He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets.He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.

REFLECTION

“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”At once they left their nets and followed him.

He said, "Come after me" and they obeyed him at once. When Jesus called them, He meant to drop everything to follow Him.

Obedience is a difficult virtue. Did the fishermen know what they were saying “yes" to? Who has not bargained or rationalized with God regarding partial or delayed obedience? When we are asked to follow His Divine Will, we are to rely on Him, His Word. If we abandon ourselves to accept and do His Will, God will convert us. And faith will carry through.

Perhaps we have been asked by God to leave all behind, resign your profession, leave your family, your friends. Peter, Andrew, James and John could not imagine what following Jesus would entail. They could not imagine the scandal of the Cross, the suffering and death.

They had faith, and they followed Jesus, His Divine Will. What is the Will of God for you ? Have we shirked His call?

There are so many “come follow me” moments throughout the day. Teach your children to pray, visit a sick person, feed the poor, feed the homeless, visit the imprisoned, smile with someone when they are overwhelmed, be patient and allow people to speak without getting ridiculed or talked down to. Many more acts of love to say “yes” to God’s Divine Will.

God Bless You
