Gospel
Jesus said to the crowd:
“No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel
or sets it under a bed;
rather, he places it on a lampstand
so that those who enter may see the light.
For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible,
and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.
Take care, then, how you hear.
To anyone who has, more will be given,
and from the one who has not,
even what he seems to have will be taken away.”
Reflection
In the beginning of the Gospel Jesus speaks about the importance of letting the light of faith shine visibly, like a lamp placed on a stand, so that it may guide and illuminate the way for others. I think the imagery in these words remind us that nothing is truly hidden from God. The idea that "there is nothing hidden that will not become visible" I think speaks to God's omniscience, He knows all and sees all.
The last part of the passage, "To anyone who has, more will be given and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away”… made me recall the parable of the talents, where servants were entrusted with different amounts of money and called to use them wisely. The message being how we are entrusted with spiritual gifts, talents, and understanding, and we are called to use them, not bury them or keep them hidden out of fear or neglect. Furthermore, in this way Jesus' words are not about material wealth but about spiritual gifts and the call to live fully in the grace we have received. The more we respond to His call with openness and action, the more we will receive…deeper faith, clearer understanding, and a more profound relationship with God. On the other hand, if we neglect or hide these gifts, even what little faith or understanding we have may be lost.
