Kevin and Maria Knox

A Gospel according to MT 12:38-42

Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus,

“Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”

He said to them in reply,

“An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign,

but no sign will be given it

except the sign of Jonah the prophet.

Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights,

so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth

three days and three nights.

At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation

and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah;

and there is something greater than Jonah here.

At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation

and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth

to hear the wisdom of Solomon;

and there is something greater than Solomon here.”

REFLECTION

"At the judgment the queen of the south

will arise with this generation and condemn it."

Out of mere curiosity our daughter Mary asked where the "Queen of the South" was from. By looking at the cross reference from 1 Kg 10:1, she came from Sheba: "The queen of Sheba, having heard a report of Solomon’s fame, came to test him with subtle questions."

When looking at the footnotes from the USCCB, we read about the location of Sheba:

Queen of Sheba: women rulers among the Arabs are recorded in eighth-century B.C. Assyrian inscriptions. Sheba was for centuries the leading principality in what is now Yemen.

When we measure the distance between Yemen and Israel, we are looking at about 3,700 miles, or 758 hours by foot without stopping.

Now, by thinking about how is Jesus comparing the trek of the Queen of Sheba against the scribes and Pharisees incredulity, how much are we like them?

Are we willing to walk "the extra mile" to learn about Jesus and our faith with only hearing it from the Gospels? And first hand accounts from the Apostles?

Do we make time to read a good book? To allow sources to teach us about Jesus? We have a great opportunity with Face ZBS to dive deeper in our beliefs without walking the amount of miles that the Queen of Sheba did.

God bless y'all!
