OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OF ST ALBERT THE GREAT, FRIDAY OF THE THIRTY-SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, NOVEMBER 15, 2024,

St Albert the Great, Dominican, scholar in the study of Aristotle

Gospel

LK 17:26-37

Jesus said to his disciples: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man; they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage up to the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Similarly, as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building; on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all. So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day, someone who is on the housetop and whose belongings are in the house must not go down to get them, and likewise one in the field must not return to what was left behind. Remember the wife of Lot. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it. I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. And there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left.” They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?”He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will gather.”

REFLECTION

Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it.

St Albert the Great was a gifted preacher, guiding Thomas Aquinas in his studies on Aristotle and increasing devotion to Mary. The greater and more persistent your confidence in God, the more abundantly you will receive all that you ask." (St Albert the Great)

God is love. And we are told to have confidence in Him (Love). The word "love" has many meanings and one can open up the internet and review the different kinds of loves. Can we translate Agape Love into our hearts and minds?

If we want something, we laser focus, we work hard at accomplishing the goal. If we have a loved one who has gone astray or is fighting for life, we do not continue with life as we want but we work incessantly to help, advice, intervene and never give up. We out perform as our love refuses to give up, building more confidence in God and His merciful love.

We turn toward the Eucharist in love. His love endures forever. We know who God is and we know what He has done for others as well as ourselves. Our faith is a participation in the Life of God. Unless we know ourselves, we cannot know Christ and we cannot come to know love We know we are sinners. We know He loves us. How do we grow in faith and trust between sinner and God?

The Holy Spirit encourages our unworthiness to seek out God. In doing so we begin to see the enormity of our sinfulness. We are not worthy of God, yet, Jesus died to save us. We have remorse, a desire to do His Will. We will be judged individually on how we respond to His love. We are dependent on God. The good news is that we are given the grace and help for healing and pardon.

Pray for all to say "Yes" to God. Have confidence in Him and for answered prayers.

God Bless You
