They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will gather.”
(Luke 17:37)
Vultures are scavengers - they feed on dead or dying animals. Eagles are skilled hunters that prefer live prey - they eat dead animals only when food is scarce.
With regard to the question of the day of judgment in the preceding verses, Our Lord's answer is summed up not with a specific date and time but with a description of ordinary life yet being unaware of poor spiritual health - Jerusalem at the time; the Church in our time - as individual members and collectively. It is of paramount importance to assess, daily, our spiritual health, maintaining it, and being watchful for his appearing. He will come suddenly. Some will be spiritually dead, some will be spiritually alive; if you see vultures circling above, that’s a good thing - you're still alive! Give glory to God!
