Jesus said to his disciples:“No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other,or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink,or about your body, what you will wear.Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?Look at the birds in the sky;they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?Why are you anxious about clothes?Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendorwas clothed like one of them.If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith? So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’All these things the pagans seek.Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself.Sufficient for a day is its own evil.”
REFLECTION
This is one of my favorite Gospel Readings. I remember hearing this reading when I was a young girl and actually going outside and meditating on the wonder of God and how much he must love all that He made.
We lived on a farm through out my young life. As my father worked to make a living for us, times were filled with hardships and not a lot of money. My father had cows, pigs, chickens and he also worked the land farming corn, peanuts, maize, and many other crops to help support the growing farm.
This gave us kids ample opportunity for helping and spending time outside with God's beautiful creatures. I remember thinking that God takes care of the farm animals through us, but what about the birds and wild animals. This Gospel reading was an eye opener for me. God does provide. It spoke to my heart then, and it still speaks to me today as an adult. As a child, even though we didn't have much in the way of clothing and material things, we had each other.
I saw first hand, the evil of wanting more tear our family apart. If there is anything to learn from my life, I would say, without a doubt, "Seek first the Kingdom of God"! Always put God first and allow him to be God.
I love God my Father so much. Since I have been a part of PAPA, I have learned so much about my Father in heaven. We have so many opportunities to learn and grow. This Apostolate is so needed today, to pray for our priests. Thank you God our Father in Heaven for the gift of Faith and the gift of the priesthood. The priests are our connection to God as they bring us the Holy Eucharist. In this Gospel, He tells us, "But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given you besides." Let us pray for our Priests as we seek first the Kingdom of God.
