A reading of the holy Gospel according to Mt 17:9a, 10-13

As they were coming down from the mountain, the disciples asked Jesus, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” He said in reply, “Elijah will indeed come and restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands. Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

REFLECTION

“So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.

Many powerful prophets were sent to the people of Israel. Elijah spoke and all would stop, tremble in fear, listen and watch. God, through Elijah, caused droughts, famine and fire to come to His people because of their disobedience. Elijah was to turn the heart of fathers towards their son. All prophets spoke God's word and they cried out for repentance.

History continues to repeat itself. We are still sinners causing problems and divisions. God became man and suffered and died for our sins. And yet the same problems of the Old Testament still haunt modern man. The Holy Spirit speaks to us to stop and convicts us of our sins.

Sin cannot exist in us if we want a relationship with God. The last and greatest prophet, John the Baptist, pointed the way to Jesus. He preached a baptism of repentance and renewal.

Are we preparing to meet the Lord Jesus this Christmas? Are we listening to His messengers?

God Bless You
